This is a very unlikely commencement address because Mr. Young was directed to leave high school in the 10th grade after failing 6 of 7 classes in this same school district. He would go on to barely graduate high school on-time, but in the bottom 8% of his class.
After high school, he would continue to struggle academically at a couple colleges before he would connect with the process of learning on his third try at obtain a college degree.
This story is even more inspirational because Mr. Young would return to this school district to become a Dream Catchers mentor. Also, at this same graduation, his mentee graduated high school.
Information on Mr. Young's journey to overcome his educational journey are detailed in his book, "Above Expectations - My Story: an unlikely journey from almost failing high school to becoming a college professor". This story is about the power of choice, a dream, desire, and determination to not quit, to overcome, to persevere, and to excel after struggling academically for many years.
